When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, European countries reacted differently. Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3, but Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg initially tried to remain neutral. They feared becoming the next targets of a rapidly expanding German military. Scandinavia had different experiences. Sweden remained neutral throughout the war, while Denmark and Norway were invaded by Germany in April 1940. Denmark surrendered quickly, but Norway resisted with Allied assistance for several weeks before German forces gained control. The Benelux countries also hoped neutrality would protect them. Belgium and the Netherlands had stayed out of World War I initially, but Germany invaded both in May 1940, along with Luxembourg. The Netherlands surrendered after several days, Belgium continued fighting for weeks, and Luxembourg was occupied. Their experience showed that neutrality alone could not guarantee safety from German expansion. Lowkey, they watched Poland get invaded and hoped neutrality would keep them safe, but Germany came knocking on their doors next.

context: Operation Paperclip was a secret American program launched after World War II to bring German scientists, engineers, and technical specialists to the United States. The US wanted their expertise in rockets, aviation, chemical research, and other military technologies before the Soviet Union could recruit them. Among them was Wernher von Braun, who had helped develop Germany’s V-2 rockets and later became a major figure in the American space program. The program helped accelerate American rocket development and eventually contributed to NASA’s efforts to reach the Moon. However, some recruited specialists had worked for the German wartime regime, and their backgrounds were sometimes concealed or softened during the recruitment process. Their involvement in weapons development also raised serious ethical questions.

context: At its height, the British Empire controlled territories across the globe, inspiring the phrase “the sun never sets on the British Empire.” But two world wars weakened Britain financially and militarily, while independence movements dismantled much of its empire. India gained independence in 1947, followed by dozens of other colonies. Today, Britain faces a different struggle: keeping the United Kingdom together. Scotland has a long running independence movement, Wales has growing support for independence, and many Irish nationalists in Northern Ireland support reunification with the Republic of Ireland. Each movement has different goals, and none means that separation is guaranteed.
